While I was searching for a way to deepen my knowledge about Japan, I came across the JS program for an exchange year at a Japanese university. I immediately knew that this would be a perfect opportunity for me to realize my goals.

Of course it is a great challenge to live in a foreign country for one year. Even more so if it is Japan, because on the one hand, it is situated nearly at the other side of the globe and, on the other hand, because its culture and language are very different from the European ones. Nevertheless, I do not see this as a problem, but rather as an exciting way to broaden my view on the world and to get to know new ways of living.
During the studies at XX University I would definitely encounter a lively environment where I could get in contact with students from Japan and also other countries. This would then enable me to experience the Japanese culture with my own senses and to build up a functioning network for further work in relation to Japan.

Additionally it is very important to me to improve my language skills by conversing with Japanese native speakers on a regular basis. I am very interested in not only learning a foreign language to be able to understand it, but also to be able to actively use it myself. In my experience, one year abroad is - especially with regards to the progress in practical language use - much more valuable than a regular academic year. The exchange with many different people in many different situations is, in my opinion, one of the most importent points on the way to properly understanding a foreign culture. However, while studying in Austria, such opportunities are rare.
I am well aware of the fact, that it is still going to be a long way until I can achieve a decent “understanding” of the Japanese culture, but this one year of study at XX University would definitely be a big step towards reaching that aim.
